With students from all corners of the world living with us, cultural events are an amazing chance for residents and our teams to meet each other, learn from each other and, most importantly, have a great time creating some new memories.
In 2023, Lunar New Year brought us together in January for a series of events across our properties. A big theme was food (yum!), but there were loads of fun activities to enjoy and get involved in, such as:
- Red envelope giveaway
- Craft sessions including decorating, lantern making, canvas painting and DIY peach blossom tree
- Free bubble tea and snacks
- Games, like riddle guessing and Mahjong
- Lunar New Year wishes board
- Karaoke and noodle night
- Calligraphy writing
- Dumpling making and tasting
- Lucky dip giveaway
- Film nights
- CCTV live stream
- Get-togethers, dinner parties and, on the main weekend itself, a Lunar New Year party

What is Lunar New Year?
The date of Lunar New Year changes every year, but it always falls between 21 January and 20 February.
The date is decided by the beginning of the lunar calendar, which is based on cycles of the moon and sun and is generally 20 to 50 days behind the Gregorian (internationally-used) calendar. Lunar New Year is a new moon day, usually the second after the winter solstice.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated across several countries and territories in Asia, with some key differences. For example, in 2023, Chinese New Year marks the beginning of the Year of the Rabbit, according to the Chinese zodiac; meanwhile, the Vietnamese celebrate the Year of the Cat in 2023.
