We can't talk about Bournemouth without first recognising its impressive and award-winning beaches, right? The waters might not seem inviting all year around, but keen surfers can still enjoy the waves even when temperatures drop.

Don’t fancy yourself as a surfer? Seaside walks are recommended to all, whatever the weather. The warmer months are when the beaches really come to life, with locals and students alike soaking up the rays and chilling out on the sand. The infamous pier is another big draw and worth checking out at least once for the atmosphere alone.

Bournemouth has a rich nightlife to suit a variety of tastes. Lovers of chart hits can head to Cameo and Halo for a drink and a dance, while Sound Circus hosts mosh pits and metal hits, with everything in between to be found too.

Comedy venue, The Old Fire Station, is the place to be for an evening of laughter. A favourite with locals and students alike, it hosts comedians from all over the country, with plenty of big names, with reasonably-priced tickets.

There is also the Pavilion Theatre for theatre and dance enthusiasts, while the brand new 10-screen cinema offers film buffs the chance to see the latest releases.

You'll have plenty to do in the daytime too if you have a lecture-free afternoon. Browse independent stores and boutiques alongside well-known names if you're in the mood for some shopping.

For classic seaside dining, Harry Ramsden’s chip shop is well worth a visit. The restaurant overlooks the sea and has some of the best chips around – hard not to love. Loads of smaller cafes and restaurants are around too, ideal for casual bites, coffees, and dinners.

Poole is also only a short bus ride away, making it a great idea for a day or night out. It has lots of independent shops, including record and comic book stores, to explore.
